Located along National Route 334, the Shiretoko Crossing Road, Shiretoko Pass connects Utoro in Shari Town with Rausu Town. At an elevation of 738 meters, it offers stunning views of Mount Rausu directly ahead and a vast sea of deep green forest below. The scenery from the pass is counted among the Shiretoko Eight Views, and on clear days, you can even see the Nemuro Strait and Kunashiri Island.

The 27 km winding mountain road is also a popular driving route. Roll down the windows and feel the breeze as you experience the grandeur of nature unique to this area. The primeval forests of mizunara oaks and todo firs are another highlight. Depending on the time of day, you can enjoy spectacular sights such as the sunrise over the sea and horizon. Keep an eye out for the wildlife that inhabits the surrounding area as well.

In winter, the Shiretoko Crossing Road is closed due to snowfall that can reach several meters. It is the only national highway in Hokkaido subject to seasonal closure and is known as the shortest-open national road in Japan. Before reopening in spring, the special one-day event Shiretoko Snow Wall Walk is held, where visitors can stroll between towering walls of snow lining the road.
