Kumagoe Falls

Nestled deep within Shiretoko's lush primeval forest, Kumagoe Falls is a majestic 15-meter cascade with a powerful flow, creating a breathtaking display of spray and energy. Legend has it that the waterfall's name originated from a heartwarming story of a hunter from Rausu who once chased a mother bear and her cubs to this spot. The mother bear, trying to save her cubs, attempted to push them over the falls to safety. Moved by her devotion, the hunter spared them, and the tale became part of the area's lore.

The waterfall is easily accessible, with a trailhead along the Shiretoko Pass Road offering a 20-minute walk each way. Along the path, you can immerse yourself in Shiretoko’s unspoiled nature, passing towering ancient trees such as 200-year-old Erman’s birch and Mizunara oak. The area is filled with refreshing, crisp air, making it a perfect spot for forest bathing.

Before setting out, stop by the Shiretoko Rausu Visitor Center, where you can pick up a free pamphlet with a simple route map (available in English) and check for the latest information about bears in the area.
