Lake Rausu

The largest freshwater lake in Shiretoko National Park. It sits at the foot of Mt. Chinishibetsu (ちにしべつだけ) on the Shiretoko Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in a mountainous area at an elevation of Approx. 740 m. Surrounded by deep mountains and with no well-maintained trail for a long time, it was once known as a “phantom lake” known only to those in the know. Today, trekking routes are in place and guided tours are available.

With untouched nature still preserved, it offers a range of beautiful scenery from spring through summer and fall. The one-way Approx. 3 km route (Approx. 3 hours round trip) starts at the Rausu Lake Trail Entrance, passes four ponds, and continues to Lake Rausu, with plenty of rare alpine plants along the way.

Boardwalks are only minimally maintained, and because you’ll need gear and fitness suitable for light hiking, joining a guided tour is recommended for a safer experience.
