Bishamonten Zenkoku-ji Temple

A temple dedicated to Bishamonten, the deity believed to bestow good fortune and prosperity.

Last update :

Located in the heart of Kagurazaka, Zenkoku-ji is known for its striking vermilion gate. The temple was originally founded in 1595 in Nihonbashi by Tokugawa Ieyasu and, after two relocations, settled in its current location in 1792.

Revered as “Bishamon-sama” by locals, Bishamonten is the deity enshrined here—depicted as a fierce warrior god clad in armor, holding a treasure pagoda in his right hand and a staff in his left. He is worshipped for granting good fortune, protection from misfortune, and prosperity. While usually hidden behind a curtain, the statue is revealed to the public on the “Days of the Tiger” in January, May, and September.

Closely associated with tigers—said to have appeared in the Year, Month, Day, and Hour of the Tiger—Bishamonten is flanked by two stone tigers at the temple entrance. Unlike the more common guardian lion-dogs (komainu), these tiger statues are a rare sight and popular photo spot. Donated in 1848, during the late Edo period, they continue to stand strong as protectors of Kagurazaka.

The tiger motif can also be found on the temple’s ema (votive plaques), as well as on charms, straps, and papier-mâché figures. Come visit and receive Bishamonten’s blessings of luck and protection.
