Chomei-ji Temple in Shiga Prefecture is said to have been founded around the 6th–7th centuries by Prince Shotoku, who led the nation at the time. It has long been loved for blessings of health, longevity, and protection from illness.

Set on high ground at Approx. 250 m elevation with panoramic views of Lake Biwa, you’ll follow a steep route lined with 808 stone steps. Step by step as you head for the top, it feels like a taste of a training monk’s path. The refreshment you’ll feel, along with the sense of accomplishment, is truly special. If you’re not confident in your stamina, you can also reach near the temple grounds by car, so there’s no need to worry.

Most buildings on the grounds, including the main hall and three-story pagoda, are designated city cultural properties. The principal image, Senju Juichimen Sho Kannon Bosatsu, and Bishamonten are designated National Treasures, making this temple historically extremely valuable.
