Ama Hut Hachiman Kamado
Enjoy fresh seafood from Toba while learning about ama diving culture.
Ama divers, who dive into the sea to harvest shellfish and seaweed, were recognized as a Japan Heritage in 2019. It is said that ama divers have existed since the Jomon period. Although their numbers have declined, this traditional profession continues today and was designated Japan's first prefectural intangible folk cultural asset in 2016. "Ama Hut Hachiman Kamado" is a facility where visitors can experience and learn about this unique ama culture.
The facility recreates the huts where ama divers used to warm their chilled bodies and rest after fishing. It offers a variety of experiences, from courses where you can enjoy snacks like shellfish and tea to luxurious options featuring seafood delicacies such as Ise lobster and abalone. A highlight of any course is that the fresh seafood is grilled over charcoal by active ama divers themselves. While enjoying the meal, visitors can listen to stories about free-diving and the divers' daily lives, making it an excellent opportunity to learn about ama culture.
For those who reserve the ama hut experience, additional activities are available, such as dressing up in the traditional ama attire and enjoying a tea time experience with the divers at the Kujirazaki ama hut while sipping coffee.
