Sengen Park
One of Hokkaido’s most powerful spiritual spots, known for its erupting geyser.
Located in the center of the Noboribetsu Onsen area, Sengen Park was created in 2008 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the hot spring’s opening. The park utilizes a natural geyser originally discovered in the bathing area of a dismantled hotel. Fed by hot spring water flowing from the nearby Jigokudani (Hell Valley), the geyser erupts dramatically every three hours—reaching up to 8 meters high amid a cloud of steam and rumbling sounds.
In front of the geyser stands “Onikko,” a cute statue modeled after a traditional demon, a beloved symbol of Noboribetsu Onsen. Holding a wooden bucket, the statue has become a popular photo spot for visitors.
The park is also home to a series of colorful kanabō (iron club) monuments scattered across the grounds. Eight are visible above ground, while legend says a ninth is buried at their intersection. As one of Hokkaido’s premier spiritual spots, each club is said to grant different blessings—purple for success, green for financial fortune, and the hidden ninth for the fulfillment of great wishes.
