Kasumi Kaikan Memorial Gakushuin Museum

Home to a collection of approximately 250,000 historical materials related to the Japanese imperial family and nobility.

Last update :

Originally established in 1975 as the Gakushuin University Archive, this museum preserves and showcases historical materials related to Japan’s imperial family and peerage. The archive was founded as an affiliated research institution of Gakushuin University, itself established in 1949, with roots tracing back to Gakushuin’s founding in 1877 as an educational institution for the children of the nobility. In March 2025, it was reborn as the Kasumi Kaikan Memorial Gakushuin Museum, continuing its mission with an impressive collection of around 250,000 items, including ancient documents, paintings, crafts, and other valuable historical and artistic works.

On the first floor, visitors can explore a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of Gakushuin. Displays include a variety of artifacts such as school satchels, pianos, and historical timelines, as well as deeply significant pieces like the farewell letter from General Nogi Maresuke (the 10th Gakushuin director) to Prime Minister Terauchi Masatake. Next to the permanent exhibit is a special exhibition gallery hosting rotating themed exhibitions throughout the year.

The museum is housed in the former university library building, designed by Kunio Maekawa, a pioneer of modernist architecture in Japan. The building’s striking concrete exterior, emblematic of Maekawa’s design style, is itself a notable feature not to be missed.
