Meiji Park

Opened in 1979 on the former site of the Kaitakushi Nemuro Livestock Farm, the second-oldest national ranch in Hokkaido. The 11.4-hectare park includes spacious lawns, a multipurpose plaza, and a fountain plaza, and is loved as a relaxing spot for local residents.

The park’s symbol is three red-brick silos. A silo is a cylindrical storage facility used to store livestock feed such as hay, and the silos at Meiji Park are Approx. 12–15 meters tall and Approx. 5 meters in diameter. These silos are known as among the largest red-brick silos in Japan, and are the second-oldest existing brick silos in the country. For their historical value, they have been recognized as one of the “100 Selected Historical Parks of Japan” and a “Modernization Industrial Heritage” site.

In May, Chishima-zakura, known as “Japan’s latest-blooming cherry blossoms,” come into bloom, and an illumination event is held. The three silos are also lit up, making it a popular, photogenic spot for cherry-blossom viewing.
