Keitakuen Garden

A garden rich in nature and history in the heart of the city.

Supervised by :  大阪市

A Japanese garden located within Tennoji Park, it was donated to the City of Osaka in 1926 by Kichiemon Sumitomo XV (Shunsui), the 15th head of the Sumitomo family, a wealthy merchant family dating back to the Edo period. The garden was designed by Ogawa Jihei VII, who worked on many renowned gardens including the gardens of Heian Jingu Shrine and Maruyama Park, and is known as a pioneer of modern Japanese garden design.

At the center of the garden is a large pond, along with an artificial hill, stepping stones, and bridges laid out around it in the kaiyu-style stroll garden with a central pond, and many trees are also planted throughout the grounds. Inside the garden are the tea room Choseian (advance reservation required) and an azumaya pavilion, where visitors can also enjoy a quiet, relaxing time.

For its renewal reopening in March 2025, the bright lawn space in front of the museum from the time the garden was first created was restored. Even though it sits in the middle of the city with skyscrapers such as Abeno Harukas nearby, it is a soothing spot where you can forget the bustle and enjoy nature.
