Benten Rock
A scenic spot famed for its breathtaking views, also known as a “sanctuary of romance.”
Located in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, Benten Rock is a massive reef created by an undersea volcanic eruption in the Sea of Japan. Crossing the striking vermilion Akebono Bridge, visitors can observe volcanic ejecta formed from fragments of lava and volcanic ash.
At the center of the island stands Itsukushima Shrine, dedicated to the guardian deity of the sea. Beyond the shrine rises a white lighthouse, from whose base you can enjoy sweeping views of the Sea of Japan. This scenic spot is beloved year-round for its panoramic seascapes and is a favorite among photographers.
Itoigawa City has been recognized as a “Lighthouse of Love Town” under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s Sea and Japan Project and its “Lighthouse of Love Project.” The dramatic combination of rugged reefs, a red bridge, a white lighthouse, and green pines has earned Benten Rock a reputation as a sanctuary of romance, attracting many couples.
Surrounded by a breakwater, the area also serves as a popular swimming spot in summer, drawing families and groups. In early August, the coastline lights up with a spectacular fireworks festival held over the sea.
