Kankane Cave
The largest cave on the Oga Peninsula, with a mystical atmosphere created by sunlight streaming through its three openings.
A scenic spot in the Kamo Aosa area, a small fishing port on the Oga Peninsula. This sea cave was formed when rhyolite lava was carved by wave erosion and land uplift, and the dynamic scenery of the largest cave on the Oga Peninsula is one of its main attractions. It has two large openings facing the sea and one in the ceiling, where the gentle sound of incoming waves and the sunlight create a mystical view.
The mysterious name Kankane Cave is said to come from the time when people passing along the coastal road crossed by hanging a hook on the cave’s cliff. It was first called “Kagikake,” and over time came to be known as Kankane Cave. The surrounding area is embraced by the rich natural beauty of Oga Quasi-National Park, and the coastline also offers beautiful views of the Sea of Japan.
The cave can be reached on foot from the parking area near Kamo Aosa Fishing Port. Some parts of the path are uneven, so comfortable clothes and sturdy walking shoes are essential. For safety reasons, climbing on the cave is prohibited.
