Yagen Valley
One of Aomori’s most spectacular scenic spots, where nature unfolds along a mountain stream.
One of Aomori’s most scenic spots, located within Shimokita Hanto Quasi-National Park. The gorge, formed by thousands of years of erosion, stretches along the Ohata River and offers richly varied scenery.
Along the stream is a walking trail with an Approx. 6 km loop, where you can enjoy an Approx. 2-hour stroll while taking in the clear air and untouched nature. In the forest, interesting spots appear one after another, including natural woodland with giant trees estimated to be several hundred years old and suspension bridges. You can also see remnants of the forest railway once used to transport logged timber, including tracks and tunnels carved through natural rock.
Another highlight of Yagen Valley is its hot springs. The name “Yagen” itself comes from the shape of the place where the hot spring water wells up, which resembles a tool used to make herbal medicine. At Yagen Onsen, located Approx. 10 km upstream along the Ohata River, and Oku-Yagen Onsen, a further 2 km upstream, you’ll find hot spring inns, open-air baths at rest houses, as well as free open-air baths and footbaths.
