Supervised by :  盛岡市動物公園 ZOOMO

Opened in April 1989 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Morioka becoming a city, this zoo reopened as "ZOOMO" in April 2023 after a full-scale renewal. The nickname "ZOOMO" contains four meanings: "ZOO MORIOKA," expressing the desire to remain a zoo rooted in Morioka; "zutto, motto," expressing the wish to be a zoological park loved for a long time and even more deeply; "-zumona," a storytelling opening phrase in the Iwate dialect, expressing the hope of being passed down into the future like an old tale; and "ZOOM ON," expressing the desire to propose a new kind of zoo.

The vast grounds, developed to make use of the natural terrain of the satoyama landscape, house and exhibit Approx. 300 animals and birds from around 60 species. The park is divided into four areas: the Savannah Area displays animals native to Africa, such as giraffes, lions, and African elephants, while the Satoyama Area features familiar animals that live in Japan's rural woodlands, including the Japanese black bear. Highlights also include the Black Bear Terrace, where you can see black bears up close through glass, and the Japanese golden eagle, which can be observed in a massive flying cage, all in environments close to their natural habitats.

A variety of events, including feeding experiences, are held here. There is also a restaurant and a grassy open area where you can relax while watching the animals. It’s a great place to spend a leisurely day in nature.
