Nagabeta Kaishoro
A road through the sea lined with 24 utility poles - it appears when the tide goes out.
The row of utility poles standing in the sea creates a mysterious and almost otherworldly sight, making it one of Kumamoto Prefecture’s most famous photo spots on social media today.
These poles were originally built to supply electricity to fishermen who farmed seaweed and harvested shellfish offshore. About 24 poles line the 1-kilometer stretch of road, and at night, they’re softly illuminated, casting a dreamlike glow across the water.
Normally, the poles are submerged beneath the sea, but during low tide, the water level drops, revealing their lower sections along with a concrete path that emerges from beneath the surface. Walking along this exposed path while feeling the gentle sea breeze is a refreshing and memorable experience, enhanced by the rare and magical atmosphere of the scene.
The path is visible for only about two hours before and after low tide or high tide, so it’s best to check the tide charts released by the Japan Meteorological Agency and plan your visit accordingly.
