Gokanosho

Located deep in the mountains along the border with Miyazaki Prefecture, Gokanosho is a remote hidden region surrounded by steep gorges. According to legend, it once served as a refuge for the defeated warriors of the Heike clan. The surrounding mountains rise between 1,300 and 1,700 meters, and although the area is heavily forested, small settlements have existed here since long ago, nourished by the Kawabe River-one of Kumamoto’s major waterways-which originates in this region.

The suspension bridges connecting the settlements, originally built as everyday routes for local residents, offer especially breathtaking views. From these bridges, the vast natural landscape unfolds like a work of art, leaving a lasting impression.

In spring, fresh green foliage blankets the mountains in vibrant color, creating a refreshing and uplifting scene. When autumn arrives, the forests and valleys turn vivid shades of red and gold. The beauty of the fall foliage-at its peak from late October to mid-November-draws many visitors from outside the prefecture, eager to witness the spectacle.
