Located in Tokyo’s Adachi Ward, within walking distance of Kitasenju Station, Takarayu is a nostalgic public bathhouse that preserves the retro charm of the Showa era. Its highlight is the engawa veranda overlooking what’s often called the “King of Gardens”-a stunning Japanese garden that showcases seasonal beauty with azaleas, hydrangeas, and autumn leaves. A large pond with swimming koi adds to the tranquil atmosphere, and enjoying a cold beer on the veranda after a bath is a true delight.

Both the men’s and women’s baths feature a variety of tubs, including bubble baths, sit baths, and electric baths, making for a fun and relaxing bathing experience. The herbal and medicinal baths are also popular for their soothing effects. The bath area exudes a charming retro feel, with murals, decorative tiles, and even a penguin statue. The ceiling soars to about eight meters, creating an open, airy space. The garden view is exclusive to the men’s bath, but the sides alternate every Wednesday so everyone can enjoy it.

At the front counter, bathing essentials such as single-use shampoo, conditioner, body soap, and towels are available for purchase, making it easy to stop by empty-handed. After bathing, guests can choose from a range of drinks, including juice, milk, and beer-perfect for completing the classic sento experience.
