First held in 2019, Kokura Castle bamboo light has become one of Kitakyushu’s signature autumn and winter events. Reflecting the city’s recognition as one of Japan’s “New Three Major Night View Cities,” this illumination event celebrates the warmth and beauty of light.
Around 30,000 bamboo lanterns are set up around Kokura Castle’s Toranomon Gate and nearby areas-the only castle in Fukuoka Prefecture with a preserved keep. Against the night sky, the illuminated castle rises amid a sea of glowing lanterns, creating a breathtakingly dreamlike scene. The lanterns come in a variety of designs, from simple diagonally cut patterns to intricately carved motifs and charming bamboo-paper lanterns decorated with children’s drawings.
During the event, visitors can enjoy live music, art performances, and bamboo craft workshops. Many local volunteers take part in creating and managing the festival, which also promotes environmental sustainability by using bamboo from abandoned groves and repurposing it after the event as fertilizer or bamboo charcoal.
