Believed to have been founded in the Heian period (794-1185), Hakozaki Shrine in Fukuoka is regarded as one of Japan’s three great Hachiman shrines, alongside Usa Jingu in Oita and Iwashimizu Hachimangu in Kyoto. As the chief shrine of the former Chikuzen Province, it has long been a place of deep reverence for the local people.

Within its historic precincts stand many nationally designated Important Cultural Properties, including the striking vermillion-lacquered main hall and worship hall built in 1546, the tower gate said to have been constructed by Kobayakawa Takakage, the stone First Torii gate, and even a stone lantern donated by Sen no Rikyu.

While worshippers visit year-round to pray for protection from misfortune and success in life, the shrine is especially lively during major festivals such as the Tamatori Festival (Tama Seseri) on January 3-one of Kyushu’s three major festivals-and the Hojoya Festival in September, which celebrates the autumn harvest.

After paying your respects, it’s pleasant to stroll through the strolling-garden-style flower garden, where seasonal blooms such as lilies and peonies can be enjoyed, or explore the hydrangea garden, known for its stunning views framed by the shrine buildings. The grounds also feature a modern Japanese-French restaurant that hosts weddings and receptions, as well as a terrace café.
