Yanagawa Hinamatsuri - Sagemon Meguri

Held every year from February11 to April3, this spring tradition in Yanagawa City, Fukuoka, is one of the region’s most beloved seasonal events. Sagemon are decorative ornaments made by combining small fabric charms shaped like auspicious animals-such as cranes and turtles-with Yanagawa mari, a traditional local craft. They are displayed for Hinamatsuri to pray for girls’ health and good fortune.
Traditionally, 49 sagemon and two larger mari are hung together, for a total of 51 ornaments. The number 49 carries the meaning of “avoiding a life of continuous hardship,” and adding two more mari to reach 51 reflects parents’ wishes for their daughters to live longer than the once-common saying that “a lifetime is fifty years.”

The festival began with the hope that many people could enjoy the charm and beauty of these colorful decorations. During the event period, sagemon adorn the shopping streets, sightseeing facilities, restaurants, and many other places throughout town. The highlight is the Ohina-sama Water Parade, where children dressed in elegant traditional costumes ride boats down the river.

Other events include Yanagawa Kimono Biyori, which offers special perks to visitors who come dressed in kimono.
