Shuri Ryusen
A dyeing studio just a 7-minute walk from Shurijo Castle, where you can observe and experience traditional Okinawan crafts and unique dyeing techniques.
Located in Naha City, Okinawa, Shuri Ryusen stands on the former site of Chuzanmon Gate, the first gate to Shurijo Castle.
It is a studio where you can observe and experience both Bingata, a traditional dyeing technique that dates back to the 13th-century Ryukyu Kingdom, and coral dyeing, the studio’s own original dyeing technique.
Its rare gassho-zukuri style building, a traditional steeply gabled structure, serves as a distinctive landmark.
Bingata is a dyeing technique characterized by vivid colors, bold color schemes, and simple, rustic patterns.
In contrast, coral dyeing, which represents Shuri Ryusen, is known for bold, expressive patterns that capture natural beauty, created using precious coral that the studio itself owns.
Since ancient times, coral has been regarded as a “stone that brings happiness” and is said to symbolize prosperity for one’s descendants and long life.
On the second floor of the studio, you can take part in a coral dyeing experience that is rare even in Japan and takes about 50 minutes.
You choose your preferred item, such as a T-shirt or tote bag, and arrange coral motifs before dyeing your item.
You can take your finished piece home with you as it is, making it perfect for creating lasting memories of your trip.
The experience is available for ages three and up, making it popular with families, and same-day reservations may be possible depending on availability.
On the first floor, a variety of items, such as small accessories and kimono featuring Bingata and coral dyeing designs, are available for purchase.
On the third floor, you can watch artisans up close as they carry out dyeing work in the studio.
