GENERAL STORE RAILYARD Akihabara

Opened in 2022, the 150th anniversary year of Japan’s railways, this specialty railroad goods shop is operated by the JR East Group and is located in Akihabara, a center of Japanese pop culture.

The shop is packed with unique goods, each one capturing the appeal of railroad history and culture. Compact and easy to carry, items such as keychains that play station departure melodies and keychains modeled after station name boards make ideal souvenirs. There are also items that rail fans will love, including products inspired by the hand straps used on actual train cars. Railroad-related capsule toys that appeal to collectors are also popular. With display shelves reminiscent of freight train containers, the shop is a space that railroad lovers can enjoy simply by looking around.

The shop makes use of the former JR Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi) that once stood in the same location. It was a familiar spot for rail fans, where train tickets and reserved-seat tickets were sold, and it remains a popular place for commemorative photos. The space combines the world of a rail yard, where train cars are stored and maintained, with the iconic former ticket office, creating an atmosphere where memories of the railway intersect with the present. Located just outside the ticket gates at JR Akihabara Station, it is easy to stop by during a visit to Akihabara or on the way home.
