Hyogo Prefecture – Himeji Yukata Festival
Himeji Yukata Festival is a popular early-summer event in which people, clad in yukatas, gather in the city! There’s plenty to enjoy, including parades, yukata fashion shows, musical events, food stalls, and more! Be sure to put on a yukata and enjoy sightseeing at the World Cultural Heritage Site and national treasure Himeji Castle during this event!
What Are Yukata?
Yukata are a type of Japanese clothing, and in the past, they were worn when going to the bath or to bed. Although yukata are similar to kimono, they can be worn with direct contact to skin, without the need for undergarment layers, so they are easier to wear than kimono.
In modern times, yukata are mostly worn during summer festivals or around hot springs. Additionally, facilities like Japanese-style inns (ryokan) sometimes lend yukata to guests for use as pajamas.
Special Services when Wearing Yukata
Every year during the festival, various shops and facilities offer special services for people wearing yukatas.
Services change from year to year, but past services offered have included discounts for buses and movie theatres, free admission to Himeji Castle, the zoo, and museums, and discounted meals or free drinks at restaurants.Be sure to wear your yukata!
