The Head Temple of the Nichiren Sect of Buddhism, Popular for its Splendid Scenery of Sakura and its Five-Storied Pagoda!
With more than 700 years passed since the passing of Nichiren Shōnin, the founder of Nichiren Buddhism, Ikegami Honmonji Temple has been preserving and passing down his teachings. As you climb up the 96-step stone slope named " Shikyo-Nanjizaka," you will encounter the magnificent "Niōmon Gate" and several other important cultural properties and structures within the temple grounds.
Located inside the temple grounds is a five-storied pagoda built in 1608, which is now a national treasure.
There is a rare variety of cherry tree here, called Sasabe-Sakura. In spring, visitors can enjoy the splendid scenery of these cherry blossoms with the pagoda in the background.
To commemorate the life of Nichiren Shonin, a festival called "Oeshiki" is held every October, from the 11th to the 13th. Especially on the evening of the 12th, the area of this temple is filled with lively crowds.
