Nippon Budokan
Japan's Holy Ground for Martial Arts and Music
Built to stage judo events at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Budokan was established to popularize Japanese martial arts.
Characterized by its octagonal shape and onion-domed decoration of the roof, this building was designed to represent Japan's traditions and Buddhism.
Nowadays, it is used for a variety of events, not just martial arts. All kinds of musical competitions, graduations and corporate events are held here, too. Since it is especially well-known as Japan's mecca for live musical performances by rock bands or pop idols, many musicians long to play on stage here.
