Teshima Art Museum

Perched on a little hill in Karato, Teshima that overlooks the Seto Inland Sea sits an art museum made by Rei Naito (artist) and Ryue Nishizawa (architect). At 40x60m wide and 4.3m high, this smooth, concrete shell is made without a single column and emulates a single droplet of water after its first hit the ground.

The two ovel openings on its ceiling welcome a direct stream of breeze, sound, and light from the surroundings outside. The floor is fitted with multiple tiny wells that cause little pools of water to appear, creating a “spring” that runs throughout the day. Known as “bokei”, or “matrix” in English, this work is a piece of art created by Rei Naito in 2010. The experience allows an endless expression that follows the changing seasons and ebb and flow of time.

Next door to the Teshima Art Museum you’ll find a café with an equally breathtaking exterior that is open for you to take pictures. The ceiling is fitted with rounded openings that flood the carpeted seating area with natural light as guests eat and relax. The menu features local products, like dishes made with famous Teshima olives, strawberries, and lemons.
