This shrine has long been worshipped in Atami as the God of fortune and luck resides.
The shrine grounds are home to Okusu, a sacred camphor tree, which is designated as a Natural monument. This is also popular as one of the best places with spiritual energy in Japan.
The 2,100-year-old Okusu is full of force. It is said circling the trunk will add one year to your life. There is also a legend that circles the trunk while mumbling your wish will make it come true. Many visit here seeking a blessing of health, long life and fulfilling wishes.
Partaking of the holy water attracts visitors as well for health and good luck. The Shrine’s purified water is full of “Ki (energy)” and the ceremony fee is 1,000 yen. The God of abstinence is also enshrined and lucky charms for protection against drinking troubles, and the "Okusu insect repellent charm" to avoid misfortune are available.
There are several cafes on the temple grounds where you can take a break while visiting the shrine. Japanese sweets such as "Mugi kogashi" (roasted wheat), which is said to have pleased the gods when offered, are popular as souvenirs.
At night, the shrine grounds are lit up with about 160 lights (from sunset to 11:30 p.m.) as part of the Kodama Project. In the mysterious atmosphere of the shrine, the lights that appear in the darkness are quite fantastic. It is recommended to enjoy the different views of day and night.
