The Symbol of Gifu towers on top of Mt. Kinka 329m above sea level. During the age of provincial wars, Saito Dosan resided. When Oda Nobunaga became the lord, it became the homebase of his ambition to rule the nation.

The current castle was restored in 1956. Inside, the information exhibition on Nobunaga and Gifu Castle is exhibited. The observation deck at the top floor gives a panoramic view over the city. During a limited time, Gifu Castle Panoramic Night View is held at night (refer to the official website for dates).

There is a hiking trail to the top of Mt. Kinka, but try the Mt. Kinka Ropeway which takes just 4 minutes from the foot of the mountain to the top, where you can visit Gifu Mt. Kinka Squirrel Village and Gifu Castle Museum besides the Castle itself.

  • Gifu Castle is located on Mt. Kinka, and it's known for being easy to defend and hard to attack. If you don't want to tire yourself out, you can just take the ropeway up.

  • After taking the ropeway, there's still an uphill walk before you reach the top. You really get that Nobunaga's Ambition vibe, looking down over the city of Gifu from above.
