Atami Onsen is one of Japan's largest hot spring resorts with a history spanning over 1,500 years. The name 'Atami,' meaning 'hot ocean,' originates from the hot springs that bubble up from the seabed.

Historically, many feudal lords, including the Tokugawa Gosanke (the three Tokugawa family branches), visited Atami for its therapeutic baths. The town gained nationwide fame through the Meiji-era novel "Konjiki Yasha" by Ozaki Koyo, which features scenes set in Atami, making it a major tourist destination.

With a history as old as recorded in the oldest documents of the Izu region, Atami is also notable for its scale of hot water and heat output. The total discharge rate is an impressive 19,100 liters per minute, and about 90% of its more than 500 hot spring sources have a temperature of over 42 degrees Celsius, with an average temperature of around 63 degrees, making it one of the hottest hot spring areas in Japan.

Thanks to its abundant hot spring sources that have supplied high-temperature water for over a thousand years, Atami now boasts numerous accommodation facilities, day-trip public baths, and large spa resorts, contributing to the town's bustling atmosphere.
