A 15-minute walk from Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine to the west will take you to a 2km-long beach. The appealing view of white sand and green pine trees puts t into the best 100 beaches in Japan.
The legend “transfer of the land” written in Kojiki (A Record of Ancient Matters), takes place on this beach. It is believed to be the place to welcome multitudes of gods in Japan once a year. On October 10 in lunar calendar, a ritual to welcome gods is held. Near the beach, there is a branch shrine of Izumo Taisha, Kami no Miya, where these gods are to hold a council about romance and many other relationships.
A round boulder, Bentenjima, stands on the beach and enshrines the ocean god, Toyotamahiko-no-Mikoto. The glorious sunset behind the Bentenjima is well-known. It is a registered Japan Heritage as the symbol of “the sacred land of Izumo where the sun sets.”
If you bag the sand of the beach, visit Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine for worship, and exchange the sand with that of Sogano Yashiro Hall, it is believed to bring blessings.
