Shinmon Dori

Roughly 700m approach stretches from the great gate at the Uga Bridge, the national tangible cultural property, to another shrine gate at Seidamari. This is called Shinmon Street where many visitors pass to and from the Izumo Tisha Shrine. An elegant and unique scenery spreads from the front gate of Izumo Taisha towards the great gate of Uga Bridge.

The old and the new coexist on the Shinmon Street. 60 shops along the street is fun to look around. When you come here, try the local specialty, Izumo soba noodles. Since there are lots of well-known restaurants, you could compare their tastes. Check out the restaurant specialized on sweet Zenzai, said to be the very first of its kind, a souvenir shop with all kinds of Izumo goods, and other joints with local products, sweets, or even lucky charms for romance.

Make sure to stop by the Shinmon Dori Tourism Information (Shinmon Dori Omotenashi Station) to browse tourist pamphlets about the Izumo Taisha area or Shimane.

From Izumo Taisha’s front gate, Goen Yokocho Street extends, where you can find restaurants serving local gourmet food of seafood, mountain vegetables and sweets or shops with souvenirs related to good luck in romance and mythology.
