Karakoro Art Studio is a multi-use sightseeing facility housed in the former Bank of Japan Matsue Branch building, built in 1938 and designed by architect Uheiji Nagano. Its stately stone exterior, high ceilings, counters and lighting from its days as a bank, second-floor gallery, and window grilles preserve the atmosphere of a historic building. One highlight is the large door that remains in its original state in the basement vault, now used as a rental exhibition room. The building is also registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property and is popular as a place to enjoy a retro setting.

Inside, you’ll find a wide variety of dining options, including a coffee shop that roasts its own beans, a restaurant serving Matsue oden, a local specialty, as well as yakiniku and ramen restaurants. You can also shop for souvenirs at Shima Shima Shimane Karakoro, which sells Shimane specialties. Limited-time workshops, such as making Japanese sweets and accessories, are also held here, offering a chance to experience Matsue’s local culture.

A pink mailbox stands on the Garden Terrace. It is said that when you mail a letter filled with thoughts for someone special, good luck will reach both the sender and the recipient. Try sending a letter to someone important to you.
