A hot spring district on the lakeshore along the north side of Lake Shinji, the symbol of Matsue, the “City of Water.” Close to Matsue Castle and downtown Matsue, it makes an ideal base for sightseeing in Matsue. It also offers easy access to Izumo Taisha Shrine, Approx. 60 minutes by Ichibata Electric Railway from the nearest station.

Scattered throughout the hot spring district are eight distinctive accommodations, including long-established Japanese-style inns and resort hotels. Every property features views of Lake Shinji, and the sunsets, selected as one of Japan’s 100 Best Sunsets, are especially stunning. From your guest room, you can take in the changing scenery as the evening view gradually shifts into a nighttime panorama. Another highlight is the cuisine, made with seasonal local ingredients from Lake Shinji, the Sea of Japan, and the Chugoku Mountains.

The hot spring water, pumped up from 1,250 meters underground, is a mildly alkaline sulfate spring known for its high moisturizing effect that leaves skin smooth. It is also popular for staying warm after a bath and being less likely to leave you feeling chilled. In front of Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station, there is also a free footbath. The “Oyu-kake Jizo,” standing at the spring source where high-temperature hot water wells up, is a popular stopover spot. It was erected in gratitude for the discovery of the hot spring, and it is said that pouring hot spring water over its head and offering a prayer brings health and happiness.
