Alley-Karasukojima

This park is one of the components of the Japan Heritage Yokosuka, Kure, Sasebo, Maizuru: A Town Where You Can Experience the Dynamism of Japan's Modernization, and you can feel the remnants of Kure, which once flourished as a military port. The park is also known as a rare spot in the world where you can see a submarine up close. In Meiji 22 (1889), the Kure Township Office was opened, after which the Naval Arsenal was established in 1903, where battleships and other ships were built. The battleship Yamato, which was said to be the world's largest battleship, was also secretly built near here.

It is now a park where you can see the Maritime Self-Defense Force submarines and destroyers at anchor. In the park, a crane that was actually used to lift and lower torpedoes when the port was a military port is preserved as a monument. On the mountain side of the park are the brick buildings of the former naval arsenal, and you can take a stroll through the retro cityscape.
