The fairy tale of Momotaro is said to be from Okayama. This museum spotlights the legend of Momotaro that has been passed on since ancient times. It displays historical Nishiki-e paintings, traditional Japanese books, picture books, toys and other collections, as well as a mini theater featuring a retro Momotaro cartoon.
There are hands-on attractions such as the thrilling Onigashima Cave Adventure with demons jumping out at every turn and Karakuri Asobi section with curious visual tricks. They help you get to know the Momotaro legend from different angles.
The ancient Kibi Region had a mythology about Kibitsuhiko no Mikoto who defeated Ura, the demon. And because there is a local specialty, Kibi-dango cake, Momotaro legend is said to have been born in Kibi Region. However, a legend of Onigashima Island has been passed on also in Megi Island floating in the Seto Inland Sea in Takamatsu City, Kagawa. Various factors from different locations, their history nad culture must have been woven in to create several versions in this mythology.
