Inujima Seirensho Art Museum

The museum was rebuilt at the ruins of a former copper refinery in Inujima.

Last update :

Inujima flourished in copper refinery and quarrying, the many ruins of the slag brick factories and chimneys remain, which was designated as a “Heritage of Industrial Modernization”. One of the ruins, Inujima Seirensho Art Museum, was built in 2008 on the grounds of a former copper refinery based on the concept, "using what exists to create what is to be". In the museum, the work created by Yukinori Yanagi who used Yukio Mishima as a motif is exhibited.

The architectural design was created by Hiroshi Sanbuichi that minimizes construction’s environmental impact, for example, using the natural energy from the sun and ground heat, and
the building employs a high water purification system using plants’ power. The cafe in the ticket cafe center serves dishes rooted in the community such as Tako-meshi (Octopus rice) and Inujima-zenzai (Red beans soup).

In the community on the Inujima, “Inujima Art House Project” exhibiting the works by various artists and "Inujima Life Garden” are located, which give you a naturally enjoyable time with the art and the living on the island.
