Naoshima off the coast of Kagawa Prefecture is the island of modern art, where prominent artists’ works are attracting world’s attention. When a ferry approaches Naoshima’s front gate, Miyanoura Port, the first thing that catches your eye is the Red Pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama.
Looking closer, you will see some dots on the pumpkin are open, where you can get inside. Touching and experiencing one of the themes of Yayoi Kusama’s work is quite intriguing. Kusama herself talks about this piace in her poem “I went to the end of space, looking for the red beam of the sun. It turned into a red pumpkin in Naoshima’s sea.”
At night, it is illuminated for a different charming effect.
