Sujiyu Onsen Hot Spring

Japan's “No. 1 cascading hot spring water streams” with outstanding massage effects

Last update :

One of the most distinctive hot spring resorts among the "Kokonoe ‘Dream’ Hot Spring Resorts," a bundle of 12 hot spring resorts with distinct personalities scattered across the northern Kuju Mountain Range. Many hotels and inns have their own cascading water streams, promoting themselves as "Japan's best cascading hot spring." The spring water is simple hot spring water, sodium chloride spring water, etc. The name "Sujiyu" refers to how effective it is for stiff shoulders and other muscular ailments, and the cascading hot spring water enhances the effects.

Sujiyu Onsen has a long history, with the first hot spring opened in 958, and opened as a hot spring resort in 1658 during the Edo period. Despite fires destroying the hot spring resort twice during the Meiji and Showa periods, the resort today has about 30 inns and hotels. It is also popular among many climbers as a starting point for the Iida Kogen Plateau and as a base for climbing the Kuju Mountain Range.

The public bathhouse "Utase Daiyokujo (large bath)" is an iconic feature of Sujiyu Onsen, with its 18 cascading streams of hot spring water falling from a height of about 3 meters. The massaging effect of the cascading streams is well known to relieve stiff shoulders and back pain.
