A historical hot spring resort located in Minami-Ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido, also known as the inner city of the large Sapporo metropolis. It has been designated as Shikotsu-Toya National Park for more than 150 years since the hot spring opened. The hot spring resort extends along the riverbanks carved by the Shirai River and the Toyohira River.
Jozankei Onsen has 56 sources, concentrated near Tsukimi-Bashi Bridge and Takayama-Bashi Bridge on the Toyohira River, flowing through the hot spring resort area. The spring is a sodium chloride spring. The springs gush out naturally from cracks in the bedrock along the riverbanks and at the bottom of the river. The gushing volume is 8,600 liters per minute, and the gushing temperature is relatively high, 60 to 80 degrees Celsius.
There are free footbaths and handbaths in the hot spring resort area, including Jozan-Gensen Park. There is also fairy tale Kappa statues throughout the hot spring resort, and there is a statue of the Great Kappa King in Futami Park along the Toyohira River.
The nearby Futami Suspension Bridge is one of the best places for forest bathing and autumn foliage viewing in Jozankei.
