Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial

A modern art festival held in Echigo-Tsumari, since 2000.

Last update :

In the green, lush countryside of Echigo-Tsumari, Niigata prefecture is a modern art exhibit held throughout the year. The “Art Triennial” held every 3 years features permanent exhibits as well as new pieces, alongside various performances and workshops.

More than 200 artworks are featured outside the triennial season, featuring works by both domestic and international diverse artists. Since Echigo-Tsumari is a snow-heavy area, snow around the artworks are moved outwards, meaning there are less artworks on display, but available throughout the year. The main headquarters of the art festival, “Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art, MonET”, and Snow Country Farming Culture and Art “Matsudai Nohbutai Center / MVRDV” is also open during winter.

Artworks are placed across a large field, with limited buses or train transports. If visitors wish to see as much as they can, make sure to use a car. Official Guided Tours are available based on season.
