Nuttari Terrace Street

Located near the mouth of the Shinano River, Nuttari is a historic port town that once flourished with trade. However, as the years passed, its once-bustling market street became a shuttered shopping district. In 2015, the area was revitalized with the opening of Nuttari Terrace Street, transforming the old Nuttari Market row houses into a charming blend of retro Showa-era aesthetics and stylish modern storefronts. This unique mix has attracted visitors of all ages, making it a beloved local spot.

The shopping street is home to about 30 diverse shops, including long-established fruit and vegetable stores and izakayas that have been operating since the market days. Additionally, visitors can find cafes, boutiques, craft workshops for pottery, glasswork, and jewelry, creating a vibrant and eclectic shopping experience. From April to November, a Morning Market is held on the first Sunday of each month, while a Winter Market takes place from December to March on the same schedule.
One of the street’s signature treats is the Numa Neko-yaki, a cat-shaped snack inspired by the many felines seen around town. Made from rice flour, it features a chewy texture and is filled with sweet fillings like red bean paste or custard—perfect for both snacking on the go and as a souvenir.

Store hours and closing days vary, but many shops are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. To explore the most shops, visiting on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays is recommended. The first Sunday of each month, when the markets are held, is also a great time to visit as nearly all shops are open.
