Ryounkaku
A traditional hot spring ryokan that feels like stepping back into the early Showa era.
A hot spring ryokan in Matsunoyama Onsen, said to have been discovered Approx. 700 years ago. The wooden three-story main building, built in 1938, is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.
Matsunoyama Onsen is one of Japan’s three great therapeutic hot springs, alongside Kusatsu and Arima, and has long been known as a destination for hot spring cures. It contains dissolved mineral components at Approx. 15 times the standard for hot springs, and its high salt content, together with sodium’s salt-pack effect, warms the body from the core and helps prevent chills after bathing. Enjoy the baths to the fullest in the large bath and medium-sized bath, which switch between men and women depending on the time of day, as well as the family bath.
The guest rooms in the main building were crafted by shrine and temple carpenters brought in from Shibukawa in Joshu. Each carpenter was assigned one room and competed in skill and design, so every room has its own distinct character. Admire their creativity and craftsmanship in features such as decorative windows, ceilings with built-in shogi boards, and entry spaces laid with black gravel.
Meals feature local cuisine made with regional ingredients, such as wild mountain vegetables in spring and mushrooms in fall. There are also plans that include shabu-shabu made with Tokamachi City’s branded pork, “Tsumari Pork,” and local sake tastings, so choose the one that suits your taste.
