Taishu Engeki Tachikawa Keyaki-za
Enjoy taishu engeki—a form of popular theater cherished since the Edo period—in a casual and welcoming setting.
This dedicated theater continues to share the charm of taishu engeki, a form of popular theater that has been enjoyed since the Edo period. Combining dance and song performed to enka and kayōkyoku, taishu engeki has long been loved as a casual, approachable form of entertainment that requires no prior knowledge to enjoy.
Each three-hour performance is a double feature, consisting of a heartwarming shibai (drama) and a dazzling buyō show (dance performance). The real appeal lies in the audience participation—clapping along to the music, laughing out loud, and sharing in the lively atmosphere together with the performers.
Seating options include the special zashiki seats along the hanamichi, the first two rows (tamari seats) for an up-close view of the action, and standard chair seating, which makes up about 70% of the theater. If available, zashiki and tamari seats can be chosen even without a reservation on the day.
Food and drinks, including alcohol, are permitted during performances, so you can enjoy this traditional yet casual entertainment in your own style, just as audiences have done for centuries.
