Gappo Park
This is a nationally unique seaside park in an urban area where visitors can enjoy cherry blossom viewing, sports, and swimming.
Located 20 minutes by bus from JR Aomori Station and facing Aomori Port, Gappo Park is a seaside park in an urban area that is rare in Japan. Brothers Eisaku Mizuhara and Mijuro Kakizaki donated their materials to build the park, which was completed in 1894 (Meiji 27). It was donated to Aomori City.
The 17-hectare park is home to approximately 670 cherry trees, mostly Someiyoshino, and attracts many cherry blossom viewers in the spring, mainly citizens. In summer, the park is a popular beach with large sandy beaches that attract many people, especially families. The park is also home to a variety of other facilities, such as an Aomori City baseball stadium, tennis courts, a jogging course, a zoo that keeps small animals and birds, a playground, and a tea house, making it a popular place for citizens to relax.
The park is also famous for its many stone monuments. Thirty-one monuments are scattered throughout the park, including haiku and poem monuments by Matsuo Basho and others, a monument to the first perfect game in Japanese professional baseball, which was achieved at the Aomori Municipal Baseball Stadium, and busts, which are fun to look around.
