Opened in 1973, Kanmon Bridge is a suspension bridge connecting Moji in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, with Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Spanning the Kanmon Straits, the bridge measures 1,068 meters in total length and was the longest bridge in Asia at the time of its completion. It forms part of an expressway linking Mojiko IC and Shimonoseki IC, and is open only to motor vehicles (excluding vehicles not permitted on expressways).

The bridge is also renowned as a scenic landmark. Its greenish-gray color blends harmoniously with the surrounding environment, and from the Mekari Tidal Observation Promenade on the Mojiko side, visitors can walk beneath the bridge and look up at its massive piers-an awe-inspiring sight up close. Other vantage points, such as the Mekari Second Observation Deck, as well as sightseeing cruises, offer different perspectives of the bridge across the Kanmon Straits.

Minicars, standard motorcycles with an engine displacement of 125cc or less, and mopeds are not allowed on expressways. In addition, vehicles that are structurally unable to exceed 50km/h, or vehicles that cannot reach 50km/h due to towing another vehicle (excluding vehicles equipped with towing or towed devices), are also prohibited from using expressways.
