Yabakei in Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture, is considered one of the "Three Great Odd Views" of Japan, alongside Myogi Mountain in Gunma Prefecture and Kankakei in Shodoshima. Spanning the northeast part of North Kyushu, across Oita, Fukuoka, and Kumamoto Prefectures, it's part of the "Yaba-Hita-Hikosan Quasi-National Park". Additionally, Yabakei is designated as one of the "New Three Views of Japan".

Situated around the upper and middle streams of Yamakuni River in Nakatsu City, this valley stretches over a vast area of about 32km north to south and 36km east to west. Scenic spots such as "Hon-Yabakei" and "Shin-Yabakei" are scattered across the region. Over many years, the Yamakuni River has eroded the lava plateau, resulting in unique rock formations, cliffs, caves, and clear streams, all of which create a mystical landscape.

Also known as one of Japan's three major spots for autumn leaves, the "Hitome Hakkei" viewpoint in the center of Shin-Yabakei offers a panoramic view of the area painted in fall colors. Soba restaurants are lined up in the vicinity, and with well-maintained walking paths, it's an ideal place for strolling.

  • Yabakei has such stunning scenery. You can stroll along the stream, enjoy the clear water and gorgeous natural views, and really feel the peace and wonder of nature.

  • This place is deep in the mountains, so getting here isn't very convenient. If you want to visit Yabakei, I recommend taking a sightseeing bus, but it only runs on Sundays or holidays. During the autumn leaves season, though, it runs every day!

  • This scenic spot is famous for its unique rock formations and peaks~

  • There's a tunnel at the foot of the mountain, and the unique rock formations stretch for about 1 kilometer. The scenery here is really beautiful.
