Kameiyama Hokoin Daiganji Temple
Countless cultural treasures await at this spiritual power spot in Miyajima.
Located next to Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima, this ancient Shingon Buddhist temple is a revered spiritual spot. While the temple's founding date is unknown, legend has it that the monk Ryokai revitalized it during the Ken'nin era (1201-1204). The principal deity enshrined here is Itsukushima Benzaiten, one of Japan's three major Benzaiten deities known for bringing blessings of prosperity, business success, traffic safety, romantic fulfillment, and honed skills. On the temple grounds visitors will also find a pond dedicated to the Itsukushima Dragon God, a messenger of Benzaiten.
Step into the hall to find a number of different Buddha statues on display, including four designated as Important Cultural Properties by the nation. Among them is the Yakushi Nyorai Seated Statue, said to be the oldest Buddha statue on Miyajima, attributed to the founder Kobo Daishi. Other notable statues include the Shaka Nyorai Seated Statue, the Anan-sonja Statue, and the Kasho-sonja Statue. In front of the main hall stands the statue of Binzuru Sonja, a popular healing Buddha believed to cure ailments when touched.
