Hanayagura Observatory
If you're looking to see cherry blossoms, head to this spot! It's an observatory in Yoshino that offers an unparalleled scenic view.
Mt. Yoshino, known for its approximately 30,000 cherry trees in bloom, is a famous cherry blossom spot. A popular viewing location is the Hanayagura Observatory, reached by climbing the steep, curvy Shishiozaka slope. It is said that here, Sato Tadanobu, a retainer of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, once shot arrows at enemies pursuing them from the mountain's base to facilitate Yoshitsune's escape.
Located at an elevation of about 600 meters, the observatory offers a panoramic view that includes the sakura of Kami-Senbon and Naka-Senbon, the Zaodo Hall of Kinpusen-ji Temple, and the town itself—making it one of the best scenic spots in Yoshino. It also provides a breathtaking view of Mount Kongo on the border of Nara and Osaka and the surrounding mountains.
During the cherry blossom season, the Komorichaya tea house opens temporarily, offering visitors local specialties like shiitake rice, oden, and kudzu-based desserts like kuzumochi and kuzuyu, allowing them to enjoy the fantastic view while indulging in local cuisine. The outdoor seating, projecting out into the open air, is especially recommended for an immersive experience.
