Juhachiro

Founded in 1860, this long-established ryokan has stood by the banks of the Nagara River for over 160 years, with the surrounding area still retaining its traditional charm. In 2003, the concept was entirely revamped, transforming from a tourist hotel into a ryokan with a modern aesthetic that appeals particularly to women.

The accommodations offer a wide variety, from modern Japanese-style bedrooms with sweeping views of the clear Nagara River to standard Japanese-style rooms. There are also slightly more luxurious options like spacious special rooms with open-air baths, allowing guests to fully enjoy the passing time alongside the Nagara River while soaking in the tub.

The inn also features the distinctive tea-brown waters of Nagara River Onsen, rich in iron and radon, in its two large communal baths, "Kawa-no-se" and "kawa-no-ne." Within "Kawa-no-se," guests can find "Kura-no-yu," a bathhouse renovated from a roughly 130-year-old traditional storehouse, offering a retro interior and a unique bathing experience.

The cuisine at Juhachiro includes traditional kaiseki dishes with a twist, utilizing Hida beef among other seasonal mountain and river delicacies, showcasing the chef's commitment to quality and locally sourced ingredients.
