Tashirotai Wetland
A vast wetland where a wide variety of marsh and aquatic plants grow in clusters.
Located at the northern edge of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, this vast wetland formed when a caldera lake created by volcanic activity Approx. 200 years ago became a wetland. Because it sits at a relatively low elevation, its vegetation differs from other wetlands on Mount Hakkoda, and it has been designated a Natural Monument of Aomori City. From June to August in particular, many different flowers bloom in turn and delight visitors.
Across the wetland, bog grasses and Japanese bog myrtle grow in clusters. From June to July, flowers such as dwarf rhododendron, cottongrass, orange azalea, rose pogonia, and cranberry bloom. In summer, daylilies, sticky orchid, fringed orchid, and golden knipowort bloom, and in August you can also see the white flowers of grass-of-Parnassus. The autumn scenery is also beautiful, when the fall colors of the marsh and aquatic plants turn the entire area golden.
The wetland has three wooden boardwalk trails and a rest area, and it takes around 1 hour to walk one loop. Due to snowfall, you cannot enter the area in winter, and the walking season is from late May to late October (may vary depending on remaining snow and snowfall conditions).
